Sites On Which I Can’t See Images

There are two sites I read where all of the images are always broken. I’m assuming it’s just me who can’t see them, because I don’t think anyone else ever makes the complaint. The sites are Dooce and Solonor’s Ink Well.

Can you all see the images on those sites? It’s just me, right?

Anyone have any clues as to what the deal may be?

  1. I can see solly’s images through my browser but not through my RSS reader. It sounds to me like he’s got a .htaccess file set up to prevent bandwidth theft (based on the server’s REFERER variable) and you’re somehow running afoul of that.

In fact, I’m sure that’s it — I just tried to visit one of those images directly and got what looks like a mod_rewrite syntax error message.

  2. Hmmm. That’s weird. I can understand why they don’t show up in my RSS feeds, but they also don’t show up when I visit in my browser. Any browser. SlimBrowser, Firefox, Netscape, or IE.

  3. Well, I don’t really get them either. I just slap the darn things up there and hope someone will understand them…

But seriously folks… does Scott have the same problem? That might narrow down if it is ISP based or something with your browser settings, right?

  4. A new voice chiming in…. never posted here, but been reading here for a few weeks. I went ot Solonor’s site and saw all the images just fine. I use Mozilla Firefox.

As for Dooce…I’ve never had a problem with her images, either. I sure hope you find the problem. You’re missing good stuff. 🙂

  5. Scott can see them, but it’s definitely not a browser issue. Like I said, I’ve checked in 4 different browsers and it’s the same in each.

    Firewall maybe?

  6. Maybe firewall.

I have other problems with Solly’s site — when I scroll, everything repeats on the screen. Always has, no matter what machine I’m on.

  7. Hey!

I can SEE PICTURES at Solonor’s site!

Thank you, Solonor – for fixing it.

Thank you, Kim – for bringing it up.

  8. Thank you, Don – for proving it wasn’t just me. ;p

On Dooce’s site, I can see photos if I turn off Norton Internet Security. I won’t be doing that, however. No one’s site is important enough for me to disable my computer security.

  9. Aha! Norton Internet Security blocks transmission of your Referrer variable. The referrer variable tells a web server what location referenced the object you are trying to get; it is also used in web statistics gathering to tell people where visitors are coming from. This is more a “privacy” feature than a “security” feature.

Here’s an article that explains how to add a “trusted” site: http://highfidelityreview.com/about/images.asp to Norton Internet Security so you can see the images (it will pass the Referrer to that site).

A lot of useful stuff depends on this variable — setting it to default on without telling people what it does is not good. Bad Norton! No biscuit!

  10. John, you’re brilliant. I just happened to be poking around NIS yesterday and when I read your post, I remembered that I saw where to turn that off in the configuration. I did, and now I can see Dooce’s images.

    Thanks!
