An Observation About Flickr

I’m really enjoying Flickr. I mentioned some time ago that I’m crazy for stock photography. I love looking at really high quality photos. And Flickr is really feeding that need for me. Plus, I’ve met a couple of NYC folks who seem really cool.

I’m also learning something: many people who consider themselves “photographers” are pretentious twits who take themselves way too seriously. These people make me roll my eyes.

  1. I know what you mean — one guy added me recently as a contact of his, and while he’s a good photographer, I noticed he has over 1,000 contacts. It’s like he trolls for people to come to see his stuff. I can’t imagine he looks at all of those contacts, but I could be wrong.

  2. Yeah, the compulsive contact adders definitely seem to be out for self-glorification.

I was reading one of the groups today and some guy was lamenting the fact that some of his best work, that which he agonizes over and pours his soul into, only get (sneeringly typed) like 15 views and one fave and two comments. Personally, I think that’s a pretty good result!
