A little bourbon, a little water and sugar, and bitters. A classic cocktail, in its simplest form. And one of my favorite ways to drink bourbon these days.
2 ounces bourbon
1/4 ounce simple syrup
3 dashes of bitters
Stir until chilled in a mixing glass filled with ice. Strain into a chilled double old-fashion glass filled with ice. I like to use the 2-inch ice cubes you see in this photo. The cubes take longer to melt, diluting my drink less. Garnish with a thick piece of lemon zest.
I like to play around with the ingredients in this cocktail. Sometimes I make it with maple syrup. Sometimes I use orange bitters or Peychaud’s. I plan to try various flavored syrups with it over the next few months.
