Satori the Caregiver

Lately my morning routine has been to lay in bed with the cats for a while after I wake up. I go through email on my phone, see what my day looks like, browse Facebook and Twitter, etc. Doing this allows me to skip my desk most mornings and go straight to textbooks. It’s a nice, calm interlude before I really get to work.

Usually Satori lies on my chest and pokes her nose into my face and Xena sleeps at my feet. This morning, Xena wasn’t around, but I heard her start to cry. She’s starting to get a little senile – not too bad yet, but it’s there – so sometimes she cries when she doesn’t see anyone around. I called her name to let her know where I was, but Satori leapt into action first. She ran downstairs and came back a minute or two later, settling herself back on my chest. Five minutes later, Xena started crying again, so I called her again, and Satori disappeared downstairs again. All of a sudden Xena came exploding up the stairs, hissing, with Satori on her heels. They both jumped onto the bed. Satori settled back down on my chest and Xena settled at my feet.

I really think Satori went downstairs to chivvy Xena up to the bedroom. It was like she knew Xena needed a little help. They’ve been getting a bit closer lately, which I love. This morning amazed me, though. Satori is a really special girl.
